Ian Fisher College Coach

Written by Ian Brook Fisheron January 15th, 2016

I began my career in admissions by walking backwards as a student intern, giving guided tours, interviewing students, and reading applications for my alma mater, Reed College. After graduating, I began full-time work in admissions, reading thousands of applications primarily from the Western United States, especially Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. (I got to eat the best food on my travel!) In my last three years at Reed, I directed admissions for the entire continent of Asia and served as the director of marketing and communications for the admission office, honing our official voice for web, print, and social media. This helped me to develop a sharp eye for what works (and what doesn’t) in college essays. While Reed is not known (at all!) for sports, I was able to find my competitive outlet with the ultimate Frisbee team as a player and, when I graduated, a coach. After nine wonderful years at Reed, I left Portland to pursue a M.A. at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. When I graduated and joined College Coach, I was living in Palo Alto, California, an experience that helped me learn so much about the UC and CSU system and high school programs all around the Bay Area. In the end, I missed the rain too much, and moved back to Portland in the summer of 2016.

Some of the best news for high school families last fall was the news that we would be renewing our radio show, Getting In: A College Coach Conversation for 2016. Last Thursday was our 48th show and our first of 2016. And we started the year with the same great admissions and financial aid conversations that made our show popular in 2015. As always, the show is free for download on VoiceAmerica, or you can subscribe through iTunes. Give us a rating when you make the download! You can join us live at 4pm EST every Thursday, or listen at your leisure. On last week’s show, Beth Heaton and her guests delved into the new Coalition Application, common questions and mistakes on the FAFSA, and extracurricular activities for the burgeoning writer or journalist. Regardless of how you feel about the new Coalition Application, it’s here, and it will become a viable option for high school students this summer. Abigail Anderson shared the results of her deep research on the subject, her prognostications for the immediate future of the application, and both Beth and Abigail talked about whether they would advise their students to use it this year.  Michelle Clifton, author of an in-depth walkthrough of the FAFSA on this blog, joined Beth in the second segment to discuss common FAFSA mistakes. If you’re more of an aural learner than a visual one, this segment is a great companion to the blog posts we published at the end of 2015. Finally, Lisa Albro came along to discuss extracurricular activity ideas for talented writers. And can you get any better than two college admissions experts with English degrees with a writing emphasis? Lisa and Beth provided some great ideas for students and families that are well worth a listen. Wherever you are in the world, and wherever you are in the college application process, we have something for you on our radio show. We look forward to having you join us for a College Coach Conversation all year long! Recent Episodes of Getting In: A College Coach Conversation:
